Petr, the pianist, and Josef, the cellist, began seriously performing music as the Karlicek Duo in 1993. During their studies at the Prague Music Academy and Sándor Végh Chamber Music Academy, the Karlicek Duo has appeared at numerous music festivals in the Czech Republic including the Young Podium Music Festival, International Martinů Festival, International Chopin Music Festival and International Music Festival Young Prague. In 1995, they received the Czech Music Magazine's Special Award and in 1996, a Special Award for Performance and Interpretation from the Bohuslav Martinů Foundation. The Karlicek Duo's activities extended to Germany and the Netherlands as Petr went on to study at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste München and Utrecht Conservatory and Josef, to Folkwang-Hochschule Essen. They received high acclaim for their concerts all over Germany. In the Netherlands, their performances in Utrecht, Amsterdam and at the Azijnfabriek Music Festival won them greater popularity. In 2007, they were invited to the Hokuo Music Festival in Nagano, Japan where their performances were highly complimented and in 2008 they made a succesful debut recital in Casals Hall in Tokyo.
